It's been a long, long time.

And I feel bad about that. I thought I'd be posting like crazy after the rush of Helvetica the film, but I was busy trying to graduate. Thankfully I did.

I have found lots of fun things and my obsession has been steadily growing. However, I'm thinking of changing the nature of this blog to more just my personal blog. We'll see.

Here's something sweet I found today: a laser-cut scarf in letters or numbers. So cute. I want it.

Return with a vengenance.

It's been a while. Too long, in fact. But I'm back with more enthusiasm than ever. Now the proud owner of Helvetica the Film, I can't stop talking about it's magnificence. Just yesterday my membership to Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) was confirmed. I am thrilled that my name appears on the same list as such greats as Matthew Carter and Thomas Phinney.

As part of ATypI, I am now being flooded with emails from other members, one of which contained a great article on Obama's beautiful campaign materials* & the choice of Gotham as the signature font. Read it here.

*By including this article, I am not necessarily giving support to Obama. I don't know what I think yet. His people just did great work.

Helvetica

If you haven't heard about the film on the type Helvetica, now you have.

According to the film's website, screenings are still taking place through the rest of the year. Right now, you can preorder the DVD for a mere $20 and get it before it releases to retail.

It is releasing this year because this marks the 50th year of Helvetica in use.

So.

Do you love Helvetica
or
do you hate Helvetica?

p.s. - how well do you do in the test to tell the difference between Helvetica and Arial?

Design Gangsta Video

This video is absolutely hilarious. My friend shared it with me, and now I will share it with you.

I hope I can be the Next Design Gangsta.

New Work

Ok, so it's been a while since I've posted... Life sometimes gets in the way of even things we hold dear.

Currently, I am beginning a project through Dreamweaver for my digital multimedia class. I am obsessed with the idea from a book I recently purchased called "The Serif Fairy" by Rene Seigfried. The entire book is illustrated with letters. I love, love, love it.

So, I am creating a motion graphics site using the same concept. I have spent quite a lot of time so far creating my own ways of combining letters to represent other objects.

You shall be informed when it is complete. (A rough storyboard is the only piece existing outside of my mind as of yet.)

Jackson Pollock

Last week in American art history, we covered Jackson Pollock, famous American abstract expressionist painter. Earlier today I was googling and came across this website:

where you can create your own abstract expressionist web-painting. The paint 'drips' as you move the mouse and when you click, the paint changes colors. Though it doesn't quite capture what Pollock did, it is quite fun.
